The Title Stack—Title, Tagline, and Subtitle

To catch a reader's eye in a crowded marketplace, your title, subtitle, and tagline all need to work together like a mini-storyboard. Think of the them as a hello wave to potential readers. Your title stack must match your book’s tone. If done with care and precision, the trio will do the heavy lifting for your marketing before a reader even opens the novel and eyes the first page. Keep this question in mind as you decide what your title stack will be—will readers be drawn in or will they walk away? All three elements—title, tagline, and subtitle—operate together to lure readers with a simple but powerful hook. Together, they create a signal that zones in on your target audience and provides a blueprint so readers quickly understand exactly what your book delivers. That payoff is their reward for taking a chance on your novel.

TITLE – THE HOOK

To generate the title, sum up the most important aspect of your story in a few words. When drafting my debut novel Threads of Red, I found that choosing the title was the easiest part. I compiled a list of about ten possibilities that I felt captured the essence of my narrative. I let them marinate, then revisited them, allowing each to swirl in my mind. I kept coming back to Threads of Red. That title finally rose above all the others and stuck the landing. That was more than a decade ago. (I know, I'm a slow writer) I felt that title would grab immediate attention and hopefully spark curiosity. What are red threads? What does this title mean? It’s simple yet sounds mysterious at the same time.

TAGLINE – THE IDENTITY

The tagline functions as your book’s identity.  While the title captures the essence of your book’s theme, the tagline encapsulates the vague and larger floating concept into a concise, punchy, clear line or two. The phrase traps the overall atmosphere and mission of your story, along with an emotional promise, that leaves an indelible impression.

In my research I found three types of taglines:

1.        Premise-Driven – Using the premise of your story to craft a memorable line that sets up the main conflict or mystery.

2.        Theme-Driven – Zoning in on your book’s deeper theme to generate a line that captivates readers who will want to dig right in.

3.        Comparison-Driven – Using comp titles or other trending media to alert readers about the vibe of your book and how it aligns with what they might already be interested in.

After much consideration and a framework of phrases that mirrored the flavor of Threads of Red, I added a theme-driven tagline to my book cover to send a core message to readers. Think of the tagline as a deeper dive into your book’s meaning. Though I will use some of the above taglines elsewhere, like on social media, I ultimately went with - A LOVE BOUND BY FATE AND SEALED BY MAGIC. This promises readers exactly what kind of strong, fated romance they will be reading.

 SUBTITLE – THE CONTEXT

The subtitle acts as a conversation between the author and potential readers. While the title uses emotion or mystery to immediately lure readers in, the subtitle delivers the particulars in concrete fashion. This important feature tells the audience exactly what they are getting into. I paired the main title, Threads of Red, with the subtitle ECHOES OF AN ANCIENT MYTH to instantly signal the supernatural roots of the story, appealing directly to readers who have a taste for star-crossed lovers, fated mates, and fantasy romance.

The phrase "bound by fate" instantly signals to readers that the universe, prophecy, or a cosmic force has chosen these two characters for each other. Their souls are tied across time. The phrase "sealed by magic" indicates this relationship is more than a simple emotional connection, it turns it into a plot device where the romance entwines with a magical element. The red thread becomes an active character in the story with its own agency and voice acting as a protective, supernatural guardian. Readers can expect unique world-building, drama, high-stakes, an emotional rollercoaster, and swoonworthy devotion that sweeps through the pages.

Think things through and nail down your title stack!
