Mastering Thrills and Suspense Amid Red Strings and Hollywood Glamour

The pages of a good paranormal romantic suspense novel require moments where safety is stripped away, causing sudden shifts in stakes. Pacing thrilling scenes, building narrative tension, and upending an ordinary life can feel overwhelming. Trying to balance all of that while juggling fated mates, the red string of fate, and Hollywood glitz and glamour seems like a tall order. Throwing in a slow-burn stalker subplot and the stakes are raised even higher.

Don’t get your red threads in a knot. I’m going to share a pacing trick I used in Threads of Red to execute several sudden shifting points and show how foreshadowing keeps these unexpected pivots from feeling totally random to the reader. Since an ancient myth is the cornerstone of my novel, I took editorial license with the retelling of the red string story—choosing how the secret would be divulged to the characters while simultaneously hinting to my readers about the future through mystical divination tools and cosmic determination.

If you follow this blog, you know the main characters of Threads of Red are Ellie Tanner, an ordinary citizen, and Ezekiel Larson, a Hollywood superstar. They have lived many lives together and their love is bound by fate and sealed by magic. But how will they meet in this life when he is surrounded by security, hunted by beautiful supermodels, and stalked by young actresses looking to jump-start their careers and hang like entitled divas on his arm?

In Threads of Red, tarot cards and a velvet pouch containing the different colored threads of Fate’s Loom aren’t just for atmosphere—they each play a crucial role in both revelation and foreshadowing while helping to control the story’s clock before the fated mates ever lock eyes.

Opening Chapter 1 with a present-day cliffhanger—revealing the absolute, soul-healing potency of the red string of fate and ending with the reader wondering who, if anyone, survives—creates an immediate promise to the reader that the fated mates will cross paths, but their romance will exist alongside mortal danger. Chapters 2 through 4 establish Ellie’s ordinary low-key life and her view of Ezekiel’s high-flying Hollywood glitz. By Chapter 5, the tension in her ordinary life is already simmering. Deliberately holding back, the tarot cards and the pouch of threads then weaving them into Chapter 5, three years prior, is a pacing trick that changes the narrative momentum. It signals to the reader that the cosmic clock is officially ticking.

Incorporating a flashback structure in your story risks the reader feeling impatient for the couple to meet, but using these mystical props fixes this because they act as stable pillars in the past. Drawing a tarot card or pulling a specific-colored thread creates an ominous pause. The inevitable cosmic shift that looms is set to dismantle the female protagonist's ordinary life and force her onto the path where her fated mate waits— all while the stalker clock is ticking in the past.

Kym, a minor but important character, happens to be a spiritual medium who is well versed in divination. She encourages the tarot reading after she is contacted by a spirit whom neither she nor Ellie knows. Specific tarot cards and the red string pulled from the pouch of Fate’s Loom create an intimate pause where, along with Ellie, the reader learns more about the red-threaded bond and the ancient myth. The cards and string serve as both pacing anchors and foreshadowing tools. This builds an intense layer of anticipation through dialogue and prose that grounds the reader in the reality of the characters' separate lives.

LET’S BREAK IT DOWN BY TAROT CARDS AND THREADS

The Tower: Represents sudden chaos, collapsing walls, and revelation. An inevitable upheaval is coming, but it will bring new experiences, new opportunities.

The Wheel of Fortune: Destiny. Things will happen by forces unseen. This card reinforces that change is coming.

The Lovers: An unconditional, solid, and deep tie. A soulmate.

The Two of Cups: Another fate reference. Two energies coming together. It’s powerful and meant to be.

The Ace of Wands: A lot of sex and passion.

The Hanged Man: Pause, surrender, let things go, stop forcing a stuck situation, gain a new perspective.

The Knight of Swords: Intense ambition, rapid action, intellect, and rushing forward with raw determination. Younger protective male energy; he's not afraid to take risks. He’s achieved success. Once he sets his sights on a goal, there’s no stopping him.

The Devil Card: Dark energy, addiction, negative patterns, detrimental attachments, selfishness.

LET'S WEAVE THE TAROT CARDS INTO THE STORY

Chapter 8 begins with the resolution to the string of events the Tower had promised. What occurs is unstoppable by any mortal and hits unexpectedly via unseen forces referenced by the Wheel of Fortune card. Ellie’s life begins to unravel like a spool of thread, but this is part of her destiny. Immediate change and high-stakes decisions are on the horizon.

The fated reference cards—the Lovers and the Two of Cups—ensure that the couple will unite, but readers are trapped in a slow-burn countdown of how these two separate worlds—his Hollywood fame and wealth, her ordinary low-key life—are going to collide. The Ace of Wands promises some steamy scenes when they do, which is something many romance readers count on. Ezekiel and Ellie are no exception.

Ellie experiences several struggles when she meets Ezekiel. The Hanged Man foreshadows this in a general way, but readers understand that Ellie must learn and grow. She must find a way to let go of her fears about the reverse age gap and the intense Hollywood scrutiny and allow him to love her. Ezekiel is obviously the goal-oriented Knight of Swords, and the card suggests that he will get what he wants.

Last is the Devil, which foreshadows the dark energy of the stalker.

The red cord Ellie pulls from the pouch of Fate’s Loom signifies the red string of fate, which is explained by Kym. Chapters 5 and 8 of Threads of Red are the novel’s inciting incidents or Tower Moments.

Scrutinize your WIP. What is the Tower Moment in your current manuscript? What event completely shatters your character's status quo?
